Jack Brock was born in Tennessee and raised in the artist community of Claremont, California where he was influenced by local artists such as Millard Sheets, Robert Wood and Phil Dyke.
From an early age he enjoyed experimenting with mixed media and won his first art award at the age of 14 for greeting card design.
After graduating from California Polytechnic College in 1964, he held marketing and general management positions in several major corporations in Canada and the United States. During his corporate career he produced a variety of multi-media presentations, brochures and training films.
In 1990 Jack left the corporate world and joined his wife Phyllis in Westview Mountain Designs, a furniture design business that she had founded. Her company is still a respected concern engaged in designing and manufacturing custom rustic furniture using the native woods of western Canada.
Ten years ago, they built their own home and studio in the interior of British Columbia where they both continue to explore their own creative interests.
Jack’s lifelong love of fish and fishing lead to his full time career as a fish carver. Upon seeing his work, the most noted comment is “he captures the spirit of that fish.” Jack likes the rustic, natural feel and look of Ponderosa pine for carving his fish. The wood is harvested form standing dead trees that would otherwise go unused. The fins are hand cut from recycled tin.
